@import url(http://219.224.0.1/NewsSystem/CuteSoft_Client/CuteEditor/Load.ashx?type=style&file=SyntaxHighlighter.css); On 24 April, Professor Tu Xinquan, Dean of CIWTO at UIBE, was invited to attend the public hearing hosted by the Committee of International Trade of European Parliament on "WTO: the way forward after Buenos Aires". The meeting was chaired by Bernd Lange, Chair of the Committee on International Trade. Yonov Frederick Agah, Deputy Director-General of the WTO, Ricardo Melendez-Ortiz, Co-founder and Chief Executive of the ICTSD, Jennifer Hillman, Professor at Georgetown University and Former Member of the WTO Appellate Body, Jayant Dasgupta, Former Ambassador of India to the WTO attended the public hearing and expressed their opinions on the achievement, problems and future prospects of the WTO from the perspective of WTO Secretariat, the European Union, the United States and India respectively.

As representative of Chinese scholars, Professor Tu Xinquan expressed his views on related issues. He pointed out that WTO is a member-driven organization and the main problem that WTO faced is mainly caused by the policy choice of its members. He said that the most pressing danger facing the WTO is the unilateralism and trade protectionist actions of the United States, a long-time leading member of WTO, which has shaken the world's confidence in the WTO. Therefore, the most urgent thing is for other WTO members to jointly resist the protectionism of the United States and its damage on the WTO. He suggested that WTO members should strengthen the dispute settlement system and invest more resources in it; improve and utilize the Trade Policy Review Mechanism; enhance the supervision on the transparency of trade policies of WTO members. As for the deadlocked WTO negotiations, we should take a pragmatic approach, allowing some members to initiate plurilateral negotiation on new issues, and conclude the Doha Round as soon as possible no matter the result is big or small.
