Prof. Tu Xinquan was Invited to attend the WTO Academic Workshop on Industrial Policy


On March 10, the "Academic Perspective on Industrial Policy" workshop, organized by the Economic Research Division of the WTO Secretariat and hosted by the University of Zurich and the Graduate Institute Geneva, was held in Geneva. The event was attended by Ralph Ossa, Director of the Economic Research Division, along with more than 30 scholars from the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, China, and other regions, both online and offline. Prominent experts such as Professor Justin Yifu Lin from Peking University, Professor Penny Goldberg from Yale University, Professor Gene Grossman from Princeton University, and Professor Alan Sykes from Stanford University participated in the discussions. More than 50 representatives from the WTO Secretariat and member delegations to the WTO also attended the event as observers.


WTO Chairholder at UIBE Professor Tu Xinquan participated in the workshop as a discussant, providing commentary on the papers presented by Professors Grossman and Sykes and sharing his views on issues related to China’s industrial policy.


On the morning of March 11, WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala met with some of the participating scholars for a face-to-face discussion on the workshop’s content and topics related to WTO reform. During the discussion, Professor Tu, as a representative of Chinese scholars, responded to questions posed by the Director-General. Following the meeting, the Director-General posted relevant information on her official Twitter account.

During his time in Geneva, Professor Tu also met with WTO Deputy Director-General Mr. Zhang Xiangchen, China’s Ambassador to the WTO Mr. Li Chenggang, Minister Counsellor Mr. Ma Yuchi, the head of the WTO Secretariat’s ITTC Chair Program Mr. Harish, and Minister Counsellor Mr. Wang Xiaodong. Additionally, he met with Ms. Zhang Xiangyi, an alumnus currently interning at the WTO Secretariat, Ms. Zeng Rui, a PhD student conducting research at the University of Bern, and Mr. Su Xiao, an alumnus working as an official in the WTO’s Trade in Goods Division.
