Counselor Lu Xiankun of the Chinese Mission to the WTO visited UIBE and delivered a special lecture at our institute
On April 28, 2014, Lu Xiankun, Counselor of the Chinese mission to the WTO visited UIBE and delivered a speech “The WTO Doha Round negotiations' Bali '”for teachers and students. Tuxinquan, the vice President of the China institute of WTO, Mr Li Yang ,Mr Liu Bin, Mrs Dai Zhen, Mrs Sun Na and all students attended the lecture.
Lu xiankun,an alumni of our university, has been a resident fellow in the WTO for many years and is mainly in charge of the negotiation on environment. In the lecture, he introduced the cause and process of Doha Round negotiation, and elaborated the status and role of china in multilateral negotiation.
First, Lu Xiankun introduced the background of Doha Round. The Doha Round is the first round of multilateral trade negotiations after the establishment of WTO. GATT, the WTO's predecessor, has undergone eight rounds of negotiations. Most of GATT negotiations were dominated by developed countries, which did not reflect the interests of developing countries. Therefore, when a new round of Doha Round negotiations was put forward, developing countries resisted it commonly. In order to make negotiations launch smoothly, the Doha agenda put developing countries' interests as the core of the negotiations. In addition, the content involved in Doha Round negotiations is very extensive and complex.
After that, Councelor Lu introduced the negotiation process of Doha Round in detail with humorous and accessible words . In addition, he stated some personal opinions and ideas about current status of China in the WTO and prospect of multilateral negotiations .
Finally, Councelor Lu communicated with teachers and students on China's domestic reform and Shanghai free trade zone and other problems. Councelor Lu offered the latest progress of the WTO multilateral negotiations for us , which brought a deeper understanding of background knowledge of WTO multilateral negotiations for students.
