Professor Sun Renzhu from H.K.U delivers a speech on East Asia's Counterweight Strategy

Sun Renzhu (Injoo Sohn), associate professor in Politics and Public Administration of Hong Kong University, was invited to give a speech with the theme of “East Asia's counterweight strategy: AIIB and the evolving international monetary order.” At conference room 607, professor Sun delivered a splendid lecture to teachers and students of China Institute of WTO Studies. President Tu Xinquan hosted this meeting and expressed the warmest welcome to Professor Sun on behalf of the hospital staff and students before the lecture.

Professor Sun first introduced that the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is neither an unexpected initiative nor a threat to global financial governance. It is the latest component of China's Counterweight Strategy in a new decade. Then he delivered his points from three perspectives: the purpose of balance in East Asia, the practice strategy of how to make this balance, the future development of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). He argued that China is establishing the counterweight strategy to hedge risks. On one hand is to establish regional complementary mechanism, on the other hand is to keep the partnership with international institutions (such as the World Bank), whose core is the Group of Seven (G7). Although AIIB supported by China plays a role of trying to reshape the existing international monetary, AIIB is compatible with the current international and regional organizations.

At the end of the lecture, Professor Sun shared his ideas by answering the presented questions from teachers and students, which has made a great inspiration to the students for the further study of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).This lecture has also broadened the students’ horizons and deepen the students’ knowledge in frontier academic studies.
